Episode 44: ‘The Mechanic,’ ‘The Rite,’ Oscar nominations, Sundance Film Festival

This week on Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider, Eric is once again off gallivanting (and watching movies) at the Sundance Film Festival. We bring in Mike Russell from the Oregonian to discuss Jason Statham’s new action movie “The Mechanic.” After he leaves, Jeff quickly runs through “The Rite” starring Anthony Hopkins (in a supporting role). Jeff wasn’t too keen on either one of them. After that it’s all things Oscar, talking about those films and people who missed out on a nomination, as well as Eric’s good times in Sundance. We also say goodbye to our Winnipeg fan (thanks to Kevin Smith), so now our Winnipeg is up for grabs and worth a free Blu-ray. Plus, send it your answers to the QOTW “What two women would you like to see star in a film together, and what would it be about?” Our favorite answer will get a DVD/Blu-ray. Send those answers to moviebspdx@gmail.com and follow us on Facebook.com/MovieBSpdx. I said good day.

Episode 43: ‘No Strings Attached,’ ‘The Way Back,’ ‘Blue Valentine,’ ‘Rabbit Hole,’ ‘Somewhere,’ the Critics Choice Awards

This week on Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider we review new movies and old(er) ones, Jeff does a lot of name dropping, and Eric does some festival dropping. First up is “No Strings Attached.” Jeff gives Eric plenty of reasons not to see it. Then the boys talk about “The Way Back,” which they both agree is good, but there are plenty of films you should see first. Speaking of which, they review “Blue Valentine,” “Rabbit Hole” and quickly talk about “Somewhere.” Jeff then talks about being at The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards where he knobbed hobs with Tim Roth, Matt Damon and Quentin Tarantino. There is no QOTW this week, so instead just simply send us some love. Email us at moviebspdx@gmail.com and follow us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/MovieBSpdx.

Episode 42: ‘The Green Hornet,’ ‘The Dilemma,’ interview with ‘Going the Distance’ writer Geoff LaTulippe, Pitch Me

This week on Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider we have a very special guest … Geoff LaTulippe. He’s the screenwriter for the romantic comedy “Going the Distance” starring Justin Long and Drew Barrymore. Before we talk to him we review “The Green Hornet” starring Seth Rogen. Both of us felt like “Hornet” had its moments, but feels more like a rental. Snider saw “The Dilemma” and Bayer chose to see the Portland Trailblazers instead. It sounds like Bayer won this round. With LaTulippe we even squeezed in a game of Pitch Me starring Sam Rockwell, Burt Reynolds and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

The QOTW is “What movie would be better if it had a superhero?” Email us at moviebspdx@gmail.com and follow us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/MovieBSpdx.

Episode 41: ‘Season of the Witch,’ ‘Country Strong,’ ‘Casino Jack,’ ‘Forks Over Knives,’ ‘Hood to Coast’ interview

Bayer and Snider ring in the new year in the traditional fashion, i.e., with a couple of movies that aren’t very good. “Season of the Witch” is dumb but fun; “Country Strong” is dumb and not fun. Bayer didn’t care much for “Casino Jack,” either, though he was intrigued by the vegan documentary “Forks Over Knives.” (Snider didn’t see those two.) The guys also interviewed the director of “Hood to Coast,” a documentary about the famous Oregon relay race, which you can watch on Tuesday, Jan. 11. Visit www.hoodtocoastmovie.com for more info. Your QOTW: What movie would be improved if it had a superhero in it. Explain your answers. Send them to: moviebspdx@gmail.com, or visit www.facebook.com/moviebspdx.

Episode 40: Our top 10 lists for 2010; overlooked movies of 2010

It’s the end of the year, so film critics Eric D. Snider and Jeff Bayer are giving you their Top Ten Movies of the Year. There are six that overlap, and by our math, four that don’t. Listen to find out what they are. Here’s a clue … “Toy Story 3” and “Inception.” We also answer the QOTW, “What are the most overlooked movies of 2010?” As always you can check us out on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MovieBSpdx and email us with your questions, suggestions, rants and anything else you can think of at moviebspdx@gmail.com. Thanks for listening in 2010, and we hope, in the new year as well.

Episode 39: ‘Little Fockers,’ ‘The King’s Speech,’ ‘True Grit,’ Pitch Me

In a special Christmas Eve episode of Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider, Jeff Bayer and Eric D. Snider talk about how awful “Little Fockers” is, and how great “The King’s Speech” is, and how pretty-good “True Grit” is, and how nice the holidays are, and how Jeff’s knee is doing much better, thank you so much for asking. There’s also a holiday edition of Pitch Me, though Bayer tried to cheat by preparing some material in advance. Reminder for next week’s QOTW: What’s your favorite overlooked movie of 2010? E-mail at moviebspdx@gmail.com, or post on Facebook at www.facebook.com/moviebspdx.

Episode 38: ‘TRON: Legacy,’ ‘The Fighter,’ ‘I Love You Phillip Morris,’ ‘How Do You Know,’ ‘Yogi Bear’

The holidays are coming and so are some movies totally worthy seeing. Eric D. Snider says “TRON: Legacy” is pretty to look at but not much else. Jeff Bayer disagrees and says it’s pretty to look at and more. “The Fighter” is a boxing movie worth your time with Christian Bale stealing many scenes away from Mark Wahlberg (not in a bad way). Eric didn’t see “I Love You Phillip Morris” but Jeff did and describes it as a gay “The Informant!” Thanks to knee surgery, Jeff didn’t sit through “How Do You Know” or “Yogi Bear” and that’s where Eric comes in to give you his take. They answer plenty of QOTWs and the next Question of the Week is “What is your favorite overlooked movie of 2010?” Email your answers to moviebspdx@gmail.com and check out our Facebook page on www.facebook.com/MovieBSpdx.

Episode 37: ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,’ ‘The Tourist,’ Pitch Me

Jeff Bayer is in L.A. hobnobbing with superstars while Eric D. Snider toils away in the studio, but Jeff is on the show anyway! Through the magic of telephones! Bayer and Snider discuss “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” (which isn’t particularly good), and Snider talks about “The Tourist” while Bayer doesn’t listen. They address the QOTW (movie locales you’d like to visit) and offer up a new one: In honor of “TRON: Legacy,” what movie from at least 20 years ago do you think would benefit from a sequel set at least 20 years later? Bayer talked about meeting Jeff Bridges and Barry Pepper, and he and Snider played a rousing game of Pitch Me involving Liam Neeson and Adam Sandler and a kid. Episode 36: ‘Black Swan,’ Interquel

Jeff Bayer and Eric D. Snider have no movies to talk about this week. What ever shall they do? Well, even though “Black Swan” isn’t out in Portland yet, they’re reviewing (and loving) it. It stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis and is in major cities in limited release. “The Warrior’s Way” didn’t have an advance screening, but film.com and thescorecardreview.com will eventually have reviews up. With all this extra time, Bayer and Snider record a much-needed promo, they also play Interquel and answer the QOTW. More important than all of that, they insist you vote for Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider on http://www.podcastawards.com/. You can vote once every 24 hours. Make it so. Next week’s QOTW is “What movie location (real or fictional) would you most like to visit and what would you do there?” Send your answers to moviebspdx@gmail.com.

Episode 35: ‘Tangled,’ ‘Love and Other Drugs,’ ‘Faster,’ Pitch Me

It’s the post-Thanksgiving episode of Movie B.S., and Bayer and Snider are bloated. Which is inexcusable, since they taped the show on Wednesday. Snider is in the studio with a cold; Bayer is literally phoning it in. “Tangled” is solid, “Love and Other Drugs” is just okay, “Faster” is slower, and “Burlesque”… they didn’t see. Plus there’s Pitch Me, holiday talk, and a reminder for QOTW: what movie do you think should be remade, and why? Email moviebspdx@gmail.com

Episode 34: ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1,’ ‘The Next Three Days,’ ‘127 Hours,’ Pitch Me

There are three big movies totally worth talking about and seeing this weekend, so let’s get to it. Eric D. Snider and Jeff Bayer agree the darker tone works for the almost final chapter of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.” Both agree that after a slow, great buildup, “The Next Three Days” becomes a really good thrill ride starring Russell Crowe. Portland finally has “127 Hours” starring James Franco and directed by Danny Boyle, so go see it already. Once again, Bayer and Snider agree. A game of Pitch Me is played, but both think they’ve done better. This time around it’s Alan Rickman and Meg Ryan. Please keep sending your propaganda to moviebspdx@gmail.com and we’ll keep posting it to our Facebook page facebook.com/MovieBSpdx. The QOTW is “What movie should be remade and why?” Send your answers to moviebspdx@gmail.com.

Episode 32: ‘Due Date,’ ‘Megamind,’ ‘Fair Game,’ Pitch Me

This week on Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider the film critics review “Due Date,” “Megamind 3D” and “Fair Game.” Both critics agree that “Due Date” isn’t as funny as we all wanted it to be. Snider has a soft spot for Will Ferrell and that pushed him over the top with “Megamind,” while Bayer thinks it has a middle hour that will bore. “Fair Game” stars Naomi Watts and Sean Penn and Bayer loved it, saying it’s unofficially one of his Top 5 of the year. Snider couldn’t agree to that extent. Pitch Me was played with an anime film re-teaming Clint Eastwood and Hilary Swank. “Like” our Facebook page (go to facebook.com/MovieBSpdx) and give us your Top 5 most anticipated movies until the end of the year.

Episode 31: ‘Saw 3D,’ Halloween movie marathons, Character Casserole

It’s a special spooky edition of Movie B.S., in honor of the holy holiday this weekend. Bayer and Snider talk about “Saw 3D,” the only new wide release this weekend. And since Bayer hadn’t seen any Saws before, they watched the first one, too, in preparation. Lots of good ideas from listeners for Halloween movie marathons in QOTW. And we wrapped the Halloween-ish tale of the half guy who scared people in Utah. Next QOTW: Tell us two actors who have not done a movie together who totally should. Email moviebspdx@gmail.com.

Episode 30: ‘Hereafter,’ ‘Paranormal Activity 2,’ ‘Conviction,’ Pitch Me

This week Jeff Bayer and Eric D. Snider decide to talk about movies! First up, It’s “Hereafter” with Matt Damon (in one-third of the film), directed by Clint Eastwood. Both decide it’s boring. On the other hand, if you liked “Paranormal Activity” then you’ll get more scares with “Paranormal Activity 2.” “Conviction” has made its way to Portland and Bayer likes it more than Snider. We’ve also started a Facebook page (just search for Movie B.S.). The QOTW is what would be your Halloween movie marathon (three movies in your specific order). Email us at moviebspdx@gmail.com.

Episode 29: ‘Jackass 3D,’ ‘Red,’ ‘Freakonomics,’ ‘Stone,’ ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,’ Interquel

Film critics Jeff Bayer and Eric D. Snider spend a lot of time talking about all things jackass-y. The both agree “Jackass 3D” will make you laugh whether you like it or not. Plus, they give personal stories from jackass moments in their lives. The critics review “RED” starring Bruce Willis is something you’ve seen before. They give the others movies (“Freakonomics,” “Stone” and “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” two minutes each. Then, it’s time for Interquel. This week they combine “Shawshank Redemption” and “The Wizard of Oz.” The QOTW (question of the week) is “What is your favorite movie related Halloween costume?” Send us your answers and pics at moviebspdx@gmail.com.

Episode 28: ‘Secretariat,’ ‘My Soul to Take,’ ‘Life As We Know It,’ ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story,’ ‘Never Let Me Go,’ ‘Waiting for Superman’

It’s another show jam-packed with movies, so many of them that a time limit must be enforced. “Secretariat” gets a big ol’ “meh” from Bayer and Snider; “My Soul to Take” is one of the worst, most bafflingly bad horror films they’ve seen in a while; “Life As We Know It,” despite its premise, isn’t awful, but ‘taint good neither; “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” is a fairly good comedy about depressed teenagers; “Never Let Me Go” is faithful to its source material, especially in conveying the emotions of it; and “Waiting for Superman” is a somewhat dry but important documentary about our crappy, crappy schools. There’s also talk of people’s favorite ball-free sports movies — lots of boxing, running, and kicking. Next QOTW: In honor of “Jackass 3D,” tell us about some dumb jackass-style stuff you’ve done in your own live. E-mail us at moviebspdx@gmail.com.

Episode 27: ‘The Social Network,’ ‘Let Me In,’ ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,’ ‘Catfish,’ ‘Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,’ ‘The Virginity Hit,’ ‘Jack Goes Boating’

Jeff Bayer and Eric D. Snider are back live! We’re talking about two really good films that hit the screens this week: ‘The Social Network’ and ‘Let Me In.’ Both decided ‘The Social Network’ is a must see. Then, since we were gone last week it was time for rapid-fire reviews.

We gave three minutes each to “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” “Catfish,” “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,” “The Virginity Hit” (Snider only), “Jack Goes Boating” (Bayer only), “Case 39” (neither) and “You Again” (also neither). We also blew the Question of the Week, but we have one for next week.

What is your favorite sports movie without a ball? In other words, no football, baseball, basketball, etc. No balls! Email your answers at moviebspdx@gmail.com.

Episode 26: The Clip Show

This week’s episode pays tribute to a time-honored cop-out device: the clip show. Bayer and Snider are both out of town this week and weren’t able to pre-tape a new show before they went their separate ways, so here’s a compilation of moments from previous episodes that perhaps are not entirely unamusing. Enjoy this trip down memory lane, won’t you? Live show is back next week. E-mail us at moviebspdx@gmail.com.

Episode 25: ‘The Town,’ ‘Easy A,’ ‘Devil,’ ‘I’m Still Here,’ Interquel

In this week’s edition of Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider it is revealed that Ben Affleck is a good director and actor and we shouldn’t make fun of him anymore. “The Town” is solid cops-and-robbers fun! Also fun is “Easy A,” a teen satire, though Bayer and Snider differed on just how much fun it is. They agreed that “Devil” — not screened for critics, so they had to catch it at midnight Thursday night, like chumps — isn’t worth your time. There was further discussion of Joaquin Phoenix’s “I’m Still Here,” recently revealed as a performance rather than a documentary, and the boys played a rousing, perhaps doomed game of Interquel involving “Outbreak” and “Spider-Man.” Send your comments, suggestions, and sacrificial offerings to moviebspdx@gmail.com.
