Like millions of other people, I grew up watching The Simpsons. I watched the new episodes every Sunday and the reruns shown through syndication. Monday morning conversation in high school usually began with "Did you watch The Simpsons last night?". Over time that has changed, and although I still quote The Simpsons to this day, I'm not the faithful viewer that I once was. To me, the quality of the show seemed to wane around season 10 and I found myself missing the new episodes on Sunday night.
So, when I heard Fox was making a movie, I thought that they had missed their chance by about 5 years, but I couldn't deny that my interest in the Simpsons had been renewed. Now after watching the film, I still think they missed the pristine moment for a feature film, but I'm glad it finally happened.
The plot of the Simpsons is pretty simple; An environmental catastrophe occurs when Homer dumps some pig waste into the water supply, causing the federal government to cover the city of Springfield with a giant dome. But when The Simpsons manage to escape, the government decides that blowing Springfield off the map is the only way to ensure no one else does. Springfield's only chance lies with Homer, who must save the day and reconcile with his family in the process.
Is it brilliant? Not quite, but it's very good, especially the first half, which kept me laughing almost nonstop. The laughs slow a bit during the second half, but it also shows the heart and soul that makes the Simpsons so special. The film offers some great commentary on the world we live in and provides hilarious satire in regards to government, religion, and our treatment of the environment. In other words, it's The Simpsons you've always known and loved.
And even though the thought of paying to see something I can see for free on television did cross my mind (and Homer himself hilariously points out), it was great to see The Simpsons on the big screen. I throughly enjoyed the movie and the desire to watch some of my favorite episodes as well as those I have missed has returned.
