The Chronicles of Riddick

April 5th, 2007 by Sam

It is sad when you have a good movie idea that executes the ideas poorly. The Chronicles of Riddick is the sequel to the movie to Pitch Black, which first introduces you to the character Riddick. This character is one of the better examples of a science-fiction character that had the possibility of becoming something bigger The ideas executed in this film starts to open up the that there is more than meets the eye to Riddick. Unfortunately, this film does not execute the introduction into the history of the world the characters live in to feel that you can believe what the movie is proposing. Which is very unfortunate, because after watching the film again I realized that Riddick could have gone on to see more adventures and would have provided a good-science fiction movie.

Well here is the good, Riddick is an awesome character, maybe not executed perfectly by Vin Diesel, but he does well with the lines written for him. The idea behind Riddick is that he is of a defiant race known as the Furyon's. His race was wiped out by the Necromonger's because of a prophesy that the leader of the race would be killed by a Furyon. The Necromonger's are a race that go from planet to planet with the philosophy to give the inhabitants the option: convert or be killed. While war is being raged, bounty hunters are chasing Riddick to obtain the prize put on his head. Riddick seemingly the anti-hero allows the capture to be taken to a triple-max security prison on a planet called Crematoria. The reason for allowing the capture, is to reunite with Jack (the unknown girl in Pitch Black) now known as Kyra. Riddick then plans his escape from Crematoria, a planet that when facing the sun reaches degrees of 700 degrees celsius and while facing away from the sun is -300 degrees. All of this seemingly good story leaves just too much too make the transition between okay movie to great movie.

Now the bad, the script could have definitely used some work. Some of the lines delivered by Riddick seem out of character and laughable almost. Also the lack of explanation of the history of the Furyon race or the Necromonger's origins is just too much to be forgiven. Which sucks because enough of everything else seems to have been fleshed out to make the movie understandable, why they could not have gone the extra mile to make the movie epic is beyond me. Now the DVD does go slightly more in depth to the background of races and includes a travel log of the bounty hunters chasing Riddick, things that might have been nice in the film.

Quick Review
Plot/Storyline
Just not fleshed out enough, I feel if they had maybe split the movie into two parts it would have ended up being a better flick in the end.
6.5
Acting/Characters
Probably a character custom made for Vin Diesel and his gruff voice. The poorly written script hurts the development of an archetypely personality.
7.5
Visuals/Sound
This is one that actually suprised me. The sounds during fights and the planet on Crematoria are impressive. The visuals are top-notch Hollywood CG.

Replay
I wouldn't turn it off if it was on, but I also wouldn't put it on myself.
