Transformers

July 6th, 2007 by Brent

The film opens with the voice of Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen from the original cartoons) describing an object of tremendous power known as the Allspark, that started a civil war on the Transformers' home planet of Cybertron long ago. The civil war gave rise to two factions of Transformers, the Autobots led by Optimus Prime and the Decepticons led by the evil Megatron. Optimus Prime and the other Autobots lauched the Allspark into space hoping to keep it out of Decepticon hands. However, Megatron attempted to follow and both he and the Allspark seemed to have disappeared into the darkness of space. Until now.

It appears that the location of the Allspark has been found on Earth and a geeky kid named Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf) holds the information that can lead them to it. The Transformers arrive and take the form of human machines and vehicles in an effort to obtain the All Spark. This leads to a epic battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons with human kind caught in the middle.

So, is Transformers more than meets the eye? Kind of. Director Micheal Bay is known for having movies with a lot of flash and little substance and sadly that continues here. The plot is pretty flimsy and I found some characters annoying or completely unnecessary. However, even through the cheesy moments and some of the lame jokes, I was entertained. The action is simply amazing and for the most part, these are the same Transformers that I loved to watch when I was younger. Could the film have been better? Yes, a lot better, but I'd be lying if I told you that I didn't have a great time watching it. If you are a Transformers fan or you're just in the mood for a mindless summer flick, I think you'll enjoy Transformers.

Quick Review
Plot/Storyline
A pretty flimsy plot, but it's a movie based on a toy series, so what do you expect?

Acting/Characters
Shia LaBeouf is pretty good as Sam, but I found most of the other characters pretty forgettable. Peter Cullen's work as Optimus Prime is outstanding and brings back some great childhood memories.
7.5
Visuals/Sound
Amazing special effects bring the Transfomers to life. Great actions sequences with the exception of a few moments hampered by shoddy camerwork.

It was a lot of fun and I'll watch it again.
