One thing came to my mind when watching this movie. Why the release date so ealy in the summer. It seemed a little preemptive. For a movie that is based around the Halloween season the beginning of October seemed like no better time to release this movie. But regardless this movie struggles as a movie found enjoyable by the adult audience. Many people I believe will be pulled in by the premise of a house being a monster and some big names behind it like Steven Spielberg. Yet, in the end meh...not much here folks. It's like pulling up at what looks like a gruesome car wreck hoping to see limbs sprawled all over the place and only to find a couple of teenagers complaining of neck pain, not quite enough. The kiddies will probably enjoy it because of the animation but us older people will not be fooled by the old rabbit-out-of-the-hat trick for very long. Because I guess the movie fooled me because I still saw it.

The visuals are one of the reasons I'm never that interested in non-Pixar animated films. The character designs are always pretty poor and like you said, it seems like the animation is never on the same level as Pixar. I'll probably still give this a rent sometime.
