Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

May 25th, 2007 by Brent

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End picks up right where Dead Man's Chest left off, with the crew trying to save Jack and Davy Jones working for the East Indian Trading Company. However, there is so much exposition throughout this finale, that I often wondered, what was the point of the second film anyway?

Dead Man's Chest's lead villain, Davy Jones, is pushed aside in favor of Lord Beckett, one of the most boring and uninteresting villains I have ever seen. Beckett is using Davy Jones to rid the oceans of all pirates. The pirates band together and decide they must fight. And what is it they are fighting for you ask?

Freedom. Kiera Knightley's Elizabeth Swann gives a motivational speech before the battle talking about this freedom for pirates. My only question is, freedom to do what? To rob, pillage and plunder? Perhaps Miss Swann forgot that she was almost raped by a pirate captain earlier in the story. It seems silly to have pirates fight for freedom when we see the kind of things they do with it.

The story, while having potential, just seems so sloppy and certain characters and moments unnecessary when we already have so much to take in. I strongly feel that the first film was great because of Jack Sparrow and would love to have seen an even bigger focus on him. Johnny Depp is still great as Captain Jack, although I could have done without the cheesy hallucinations.

I feel this film suffered much in the same way Spiderman 3 suffered by trying to do too much. We have so many great ideas and great characters, but are unable to devote the time deserved to them and to smoothing out the story.

That said, the visuals in the film are outstanding. There are some great fantasy locations that the characters visit and each is truly captivating. The work on Davy Jones and his condemned crew is every bit as good as it was in the last film and the pirate ship battles at the end are epic.

But in the end, I can't help but feel disappointed with the last two films. Maybe it's because I expected nothing from the first and was so pleasantly surprised, and expected too much from the sequels. Maybe I had my own idea of where the story should head and it caused me to write these off. Maybe it's both. But I do know one thing for sure, I still love Jack Sparrow and if he returns in another adventure, I will as well.

Quick Review
Plot/Storyline
A convoluted mess that had it's moments, but is ultimately a let down.
6.5
Acting/Characters
Johnny Depp is, as always, wonderful as Jack Sparrow and the time we have with Davy Jones(Bill Nighy) and Barbossa(Geoffrey Rush) are great as well. Some characters seemed unnecessary and others underused. Beckett is a bore as the films main antagonist.

Visuals/Sound
There are some great visuals here from the locales, to the costumes, to the creatures, it all looks outstanding. The final battle is spectacular.
9.5
Replay
I want to give this another shot and will once it hits DVD, but as of right now, I have no desire to see it again.
