Charlotte's Web

April 5th, 2007 by Sam

This is a family friendly movie based on the book by E.B White. It does a good job of adapting the book to this real life movie adaption. It stars Dakota Fanning as Fern, the kid who saved Wilbur's life, Julia Roberts plays Charlotte the spider and does a good job of delivering the life lessons being taught through the eyes of a arachnid. Other familiar voices heard are Steve Buscemi as the rat, Oprah Winfrey a goose, and others such as Cedric the Entertainer.

Now I know a lot of you are probably thinking what they crap Sam, you are watching a movie that does not involve decapitating warriors or gratuitous amounts of violence and cursing. Well, to tell you the truth, being a new father I am starting to realize that I need to be careful with what movies I have around the house and adding this to my collection will payoff someday when Anya asks where babies come from. Cue, pop in Charlotte's Web and let my wife explain when she gets home. Am I thinking way ahead, you better believe it but better safe than sorry.

To summarize for those who do not know the story of Charlotte's Web. Wilbur is a pig, not only a pig but a runt pig. Instead of being slaughtered, to prevent what seems a less cruel fate, Fern takes the pig under her wing and helps raise him as her own (not really). But Fern is just delaying the inevitable, that Wilbur will be slaughtered for yummy bacon one day. Cue Charlotte the spider who comes up with a plan to save the precocious pig. This movie is very family friendly, enough so you could watch it with any age of child and feel comfortable (except maybe with your older friends). DVD extras include gag reel, deleted scenes, commentary, history of the story's origin, and others like what happened to the pigs after the fact.

Quick Review
Plot/Storyline
It is a classic story with a lot of heart and good morals.

Acting/Characters
This is the first pig I've seen acting and he seemed up to par. Plus the other casts of voices all sound appropriate and are convincing.

Visuals/Sound
Nothing flashy, mostly because it is not needed. Beautiful countryside (yeah I might be becoming a woman).

Replay
I am preparing myself to watch it over and over again as my little one watches it over and over again.
