High Plains Drifter

March 28th, 2007 by Sam

What do you get when you gobble down sweets. A pain in your head and some stink on your feet. While all that may be true, you might also get High Plains Drifter. This dated Clint Eastwood film is definitely not one of his better moments in his long list of movies and directing choices. Yes, that is correct Clint Eastwood not only stars in this film he also directs it. Which this movie definitely shows that everyone has to start somewhere.

Clint Eastwood plays a lone stranger that upon his first 15 minutes upon entering a town he has never been in, shoots and kills three people and rapes one woman. Oh but don't worry they all had it coming to them as the lone stranger's character would have you believe. Now what do the townspeople of this fair town do upon this ridiculous behavior, they of course hire him as a gunfighter and give him total freedom in the town. What does the stranger do? Well of course makes a midget named Mordecai the sheriff and the mayor, sleeps with a married woman, and has the townspeople paint the whole town red and renames the town from Tobago to Hell.

That's right friends I only wish that I had made some of this story up, but all of it is true with just a few of the "key" plot left out for anyone needing a good laugh. Oh Eastwood, why, why do I love you so.

Quick Review
Plot/Storyline
It makes about as much sense as my review.
1.5
Acting/Characters
The acting is as comical as it is amusing.
5.5
Visuals/Sound
Do you know the sound of silence? If not you will after this movie. Oh and also bullwhips.

It's actually been a long time since I have watched this, but I remember liking it. And from looking around online, I found that there are a majority of people who enjoyed it and enjoyed the discussion of who (or what) the Stranger could be. I can't remember it that well, so I'll have to watch it again before I cast my vote.

I just watched it again and it is nowhere near as laughably bad as you described. It's nothing great, but it's on par with most old westerns.
