TMNT

I'm a turtles fan. I have been for as long as I can remember. I played the video games, bought the toys, watched the cartoon and the live action movies. The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film is still a favorite of mine and although the sequels get a bit silly, I still find them fun. And that's how I would describe the Turtles new outing, it's a bit silly, but still a lot of fun.

The new adventure starts after the Turtles have defeated Shredder and have separated as a family. Leonardo has traveled to the jungle to try and become a better leader, while his brothers have taken other various jobs. Donatello works as tech support for computer problems, Michelangelo works at parties dressed in a giant turtle costume, and Raphael has created an alter ego, the Nightwatcher, who hunts down criminals.

In the meantime, an ancient legend seems to be coming true when thirteen monsters appear in New York City. The Turtles must not only become a family again, but also the team that they once were to discover where these monsters came from. They team up with long time friends April O'Neil and Casey Jones to stop the monsters, fight the Foot Clan and save New York City.

Ok, so the story is a tad silly and it isn't without plot holes. The thirteen monsters seem to appear from nowhere and while we are given an explanation of their origin thousands of years ago, we don't know why they have went unnoticed until now. However, it does provide for a lot of action and excitement.

The personalities of each turtle are the same as fans remember them. Leonardo and Raphael get the most attention as they both harbor hard feelings toward the other. Donatello and Michelangelo aren't given a whole lot to do, but provide some of the humor they are known for. It's fun to see them back on the big screen.

The style of the animation, while not highly detailed, fits the Turtles very nicely and provides for more exciting fight scenes then the live action films. The Turtles jump across buildings, swing through the air and do many others stunts that wouldn't be possible for someone in a suit. There is one fight scene in-particular that occurs outside in the rain and is shot beautifully.

Overall, I think the younger audience will love it, while some adults may have a hard time getting into the story. If you are a long time fan of the Turtles though, I think you'll be happy with it.

I'm glad to hear that the new movie stays close to home with the original Ninja Turtles. I too bought the toys, video games, movies, and watched the TV show. I'm a turtle fan. When I heard that they wouldn't be fighting Shredder and the crew I was a little worried, but it sounds like there's still cool action and silly humor. So based on your review I'll definitely have to see it, and I'm glad they brought back Casey Jones. He never got enough play in the live action movies.
