Music & Lyrics

Review by Louisa Otto

Music & Lyrics is a cute romantic-comedy starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. Grant plays the washed-up 80’s pop star, Alex Fletcher, who is trying to make his way back into the music industry. Barrymore plays Sophie Fisher, Alex’s “plant lady” who just happens to have a talent at writing lyrics. The two hook up to write a song for the famous pop princess, Cora, in an attempt to put Alex’s name back in the music business.

As a guest reviewer, I feel the need to give an honest review of this film so that future viewers do not waste their money. This film is cute and amusing, yet it lacks depth, commitment, and an ending. The character development in this film is minimal. Barrymore carries the movie in this area with her quirks and paranoia. Although there are many laughable moments, there is no commitment to a story line and thus the ending seems disappointing. I left the theatre thinking it was cute but I had no attachment to the characters. Overall, I would say to wait until it comes to video. There are much better films and “chick flicks” out there.

Quick Review
Plot/Storyline
The story is amusing but lacks a driving-force to keep it going.
8
Acting/Characters
If Drew Barrymore were not in this movie, there would be no reason to watch it.
7
Visuals/Sound
Considering you can see the microphone in the frame during several scenes, this film obviously isn’t up to par.
5
Replay
I would only watch this again if it were playing in the background while I were doing something fun.

Thanks again for the review Louisa! I was somewhat interested in this, but I think I may wait and rent it. I can't believe you could see the microphone in the frame! That's crazy.

I appreciated reading Louisa's review. Personally knowing Louisa, and sharing her appreciation for 'chick flicks', I am glad that I know that this movie is not worth my time or money. I would also like to add that it was fun to read a guest review. Perhaps this is something that Brent and Sam can consider doing in the future.
