Do you remember the comic Calvin and Hobbes. Where each adventure that Calvin went on you had to decide whether they were actually happening or if it was all made up. Was Hobbes just an imaginary tiger, or was he real. Now I am sure there are those people that will tell you it was all made up and when it was Calvin's perspective being displayed it was imaginary. But a select few really want to believe that what was happening was real and that Calvin was really experiencing his adventures.
A lot of this translates over to the movie Pan's Labyrinth. Though during a much harsher and darker time. A little girl dealing with a controlling step father (who does horrible deeds), dealing with this during a time of war. This is the only controversy that I believe people will have a hard time depicting while watching this movie. Should one believe that the fantasies that the little girl sees and believes are real or just make believe in a time of dire need.
Regardless this movie is beautifully done, and has a wonderful story to boot. Violent scenes can be difficult to watch during the movie, but it only adds to the effect of the film to draw you in and capture you in a way that a lot of movies would lose the casual viewer. Pan's Labyrinth is a definite Oscar contender with emotional drive and bold characters.

| Visuals/Sound I worried this movie was just going to be beautiful and that's it. Well it's beautifully shot with good transition between fantasy and reality. |

Under your plot and storyline rating, you knock off two points because of questions the story might leave with viewers. What questions? If you are referring to the question of whether the fantasy world is actually real or not, why should that be answered? Just like Calvin and Hobbes, the writer's intention is to let you choose for yourself and by doing that, it creates some great discussion about the movie.
