Children of Men

January 23rd, 2007 by Sam

Hope is lost. Woman can no longer have children and the youngest human has just been murdered. What kind of world would it be if there was no more little children laugh? No more total faith and reliability from children in their parents and the humanity in general. Would the human race lost it's faith and chaos ensue? Would life seem pointless, no reason to continue? These are some of the issues that take place in Children of Men.

Becoming a dad myself recently it is hard for me to imagine what it would be like to know no babies were going to be born. To not have my wonderful baby girl counting on me for everyday activities of care. Things that I would not give up now that I have become a father. This movie not only hits hard in the minds of parents everywhere I am sure, but it also presents the scary possibility that hope would be abandoned among humanity.

Each character in the movie is so perfectly crafted, there is the anti-hero played by Clive Owen who is the pinnacle of the antagonist needing a life changing event to get his life back, who from the start of the film seems to have emotionally died, so much so that even after having almost been killed in a bombing, just walks away and continues to go to work. This short paragraph does not even come close to conveying the life of the character and the change it takes upon meeting a pregnant woman name Ki.

Now I have to include this last bit for every guy out there. Nearing the end of the film there is one of the most believable and incredible war scenes that I have ever seen in a movie since Saving Private Ryan. While not on quit the grand scale as Ryan, Children of Men's war scene is so action filled and the camera is used in such a war correspondent way that it is unique enough to make a not of.

Quick Review
Plot/Storyline
Unique and original in a time when sequels are looming on the horizon.

Acting/Characters
First rate quality. Characters each have a driving force behind them to accomplish their goals for their beliefs.

Visuals/Sound
Conveys a sense of such loss at the beginning, it does not seem possible to have a happy ending. Also the war scene sound is spot on.
