Casino Royale

November 18th, 2006 by Sam

The Bond movies a staple in many people's lives. From the people that grew up with the movies. To the newomers who have found that Bond is their kind of "superhero." Unfortunately, the movies have been getting a bit stale. I could say that a new Bond movie was coming out and you would name off every thing that was going to be in the movie. Beginning crazy chase/stunt scene, check. Crazy gadgets introduced by a characrter named Q, check. Beautiful woman, one willing to die for, check. Cars that no one but the most ridiculously wealthy individuals could afford, check. The list continues on and on and on to the point of not really enjoying anything new out of the movies anymore.

But thankfully, some big wig in Hollywood decided that the Bond franchise needed a face lift (figuratively and litereally speaking). Notice I did not say reinvent, the formula was not wrong, it was just becoming very very predictable. Now of course there are going to be the naysayer who says Daniel Craig can not be Bond, he is blonde and Bond (hey that rhymes). But for all those cynics out there, I am here to tell you Daniel Craig works way better than any Bond I have ever seen. For a very good reason, he actually looks like he can kick ass (pardon my cursing). Too many of the former Bonds have really only convinced me that they could have tea with the queen and eat little cucumber sandwiches. Granted, back in the day of Sean Connery it was a different type of time and a different type of spy, but still I want a Bond that actually looks like he can handle himself. Bronson came close, but after seeing Casino Royale Daniel Craig is where it is at.

Another standard in all Bond movies was the gadgets, but I have always found it hockey he had the exact gadgets he needed for his mission. Basically, it became ludicrous after a while. Don't get me wrong though Casino Royale has gadgets, but they do seem much more spy like and not so perfectly worked into the script, to wow those who also go crazy when watching fireworks.

To tie it all up Casino Royale is a fresh start in a franchise, which needed a little freshening up. Ever wonder about Bond's roots, Casino Royale begins to get into the back-story without dragging its feet to do so and it does it with some humor too. Ever wonder about Bonds particular tastes (in cars, woman, drinks, etc.), this movie also touches on it again with some humor thrown in for the devout Bond fan. Almost as if the franchise realized it had began to walk down the same path over and over, the movie pokes fun at the regular quips and comedy of the old movies while promising a future for a new kind of Bond.

Quick Review
Plot/Storyline
One of the better stories to come out in the franchise, with modern day themes.

Actors are believable, even the female roles. Come on I know none of you believed Denise Richards was a scientist.
