Feast

Feast is the third and final film to come out of Project Greenlight, a reality show developed by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to help aspiring writers or directors get their big break. For those that watched the show, you saw how first time director John Gulager was having a pretty rough time making this film. The good news is, Gulager has some fun with it and we do too.

The story takes place in an old country bar in the middle of the desert. We begin by getting introduced to the variety of characters in the bar with a quick freeze frame intro that gives us a nickname for the character, some fun facts about them, and their life expectancy. The intro's are pretty entertaining, but with the number of characters, it gets old after awhile. After introductions, the film kicks into gear when a man burst through the door, bloody and toting a shotgun. He displays the severed head of a strange creature and says more are headed to the bar. Soon after, the creature attacks and we see how accurate the characters life expectancies were.

Feast

The plot is pretty basic and there isn't really anything new here in terms of horror films, but there are a few surprises that will catch you off guard. Gulager manages to create some nice shots, but the action scenes are hampered by shaky cam, making it difficult to see much of what is happening. This was most likely done to avoid showing the monsters who would otherwise look really, really cheesy if you actually got a good look at them. There is plenty of gore however and a lot of over the top moments that are a lot of fun.

The actors are all pretty decent as well and they do the best they can with the weak dialogue, but fail to create any truly memorable scenes. The end result is some crazy encounters with the monsters, a few tense moments, lots of blood, and a little humor thrown in. With Feast only being in theaters this weekend, it's doubtful that many people will see it or even know about it, but I recommend renting the DVD which comes out in October. The audience I was with really seemed to enjoy it and I had a blast.

Quick Review
Plot/Storyline
Not much here, monsters attack some people in a bar. Pretty simple.
5
Acting/Characters
The diaogue isn't so great, but the characters are pretty entertaining, forgettable, but entertaining.
7
Visuals/Sound
Although the shaky cam was disappointing, there are plenty of nice shots and the monsters come off pretty well.
8
Replay
The film is a lot of fun, there are cheesy lines, but it made for a good time at the movie theater. I wouldn't mind to see it again and will probably check it out on DVD.
